The super-Swede will be based on the front-wheel-drive Astra platform, and powered by either a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine or a normally aspirated V6. Plans to base both roadsters on the rear-wheel-drive chassis of the US-only Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky have apparently been shelved, because of the mammoth cost of converting it to right-hand drive.

A spokesman for the company confirmed to Auto Express: "There are people working on high-revving diesel engines at the moment, and I can see us using one in the MX-5."

To be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, it features a more attractive face than at present. It has Peugeot-style headlamps which sweep up into the bonnet, as well as an oval grille and neatly integrated foglights. At the rear, the tail-lamps have been revamped, too, while both ends get a new bumper design to give the car a more rounded look.

A new system called...

A new system called Tracker Response uses GPS technology and a driver validation set-up. If the car is started by someone without the special electronic tag, a text message or E-mail is sent to the owner. They can call a control centre to say whether the motor should be moving or not - and even monitor the vehicle"s movements remotely via any PC! Anxious parents will also be able to keep an eye on how fast grown-up children are driving when they borrow the car, as the unit has a speed limit alert function.

A Tracker spokesman said: "This is bad news for thieves. By cutting prices and introducing an interactive product, we are ensuring round-the-clock surveillance is possible."

Systems now range from ÷£219 for the base Monitor to ÷£499 for the flagship Response.
