The new executive machine follows the S-Class"s styling, and features a bold face with a broad grille, plus dramatic triangular headlights for a look which is far more striking than the current car"s. The rest of the saloon is also expected to be inspired by the S-Class, with the design taking cues from the CLS four-door coupé, too.

A spokesman for Nissan...

A spokesman for Nissan said bosses will be closely monitoring reactions to the stubby show car. He told Auto Express: "It has been designed with a view to being a production model, and it could go on sale worldwide."

The ÷£16,500 three-seater is aimed at first-time buyers, and is the result of a two-year Internet study into what young motorists want.

Performance and technology were top of the list, so the Urge boasts a range of advanced features, including a games console in the boot!

Strong performance is largely the result of lightweight construction - the Urge tips the scales at only 1,088kg - and power comes from a high-revving 2.0-litre petrol engine. The front-mounted unit is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox driving the rear wheels, while the car"s racy nature is exaggerated by glass panels in the doors, allowing occupants to see the road flashing past.

"The Urge"s sense of exhilaration comes more from the exposed body and driving environment than costly materials," explained Bruce Campbell, vice-president of Nissan Design America.

Despite a wheelbase that matches the firm"s 350Z sports car"s, the Urge is 40cm shorter, thanks to minimal overhangs. Squared-off headlights feature at the front, while the bonnet and windscreen are made from one glass panel.

Dramatic-looking scissor-doors open to reveal a minimal cockpit, which has room for a second passenger thanks to a single hidden rear seat. Meanwhile, the T-bar roof has a canvas hood to keep weight and costs down.

The dashboard features three digital screens to control everything from the sat-nav and climate control, to the stereo and suspension settings. There are even docking stations for a digital music player and mobile phone on the aluminium centre console.

Expect a toned-down cabin for production - but gaming fans would certainly appreciate the built-in Microsoft Xbox 360. It boasts a screen that folds from behind the rear view mirror, while owners can use the Urge"s wheel and pedals to control the on-screen action.
