ABOUT one in 20 drivers...

ABOUT one in 20 drivers does not have any insurance - that"s a staggering 1.5 million people. Accidents involving these rule-dodgers cost the industry an extra í‚á£550million per year. This adds í‚á£30 on to every premium.

However, fraudulent claims have a far bigger effect on spiralling costs, accounting for 10 per cent of each policy.

CAR crime may have dropped from 504,000 cases in 2000 to just over 250,000 now, but it"s still the same vehicles which are stolen most frequently. The top three are all Vauxhalls: the 1989 Belmont Merit, 1991 Nova 1.2 and 1994 Astra Merit.
