It"s a real shame that the favourite for next year’s championship has just retired. And no, I’m not going to start looking at Michael Schumacher through scarlet-tinted spectacles. He did some bad things during his career, and although he was a fantastic driver, he was a far from great sportsman. What he was brilliant at was never knowing when he was beaten. And he proved that for the umpteenth time on Sunday.

Sources within the Luton manufacturer have let slip that company bosses are closely watching the popularity of the GM Journey - which goes on sale in South America later this year. If that model proves to be a success, then the maker may offer something similar in UK showrooms.

Although the supermini...

Although the supermini is the nation"s favourite test car, a safety fault has forced the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to take drastic measures.

Parent firm General Motors has recalled more than 250,000 56-plate models across Europe, after a fault was found that could cause a loss of steering. It says 26,000 of these are in the UK, but only a fraction will be affected.

However, the DSA has issued examiners and instructors with a list of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) to check learner cars as they arrive for their test. Novices with affected models will be turned away until essential checks have been carried out.
