It"s a real shame that...

It"s a real shame that the favourite for next year’s championship has just retired. And no, I’m not going to start looking at Michael Schumacher through scarlet-tinted spectacles. He did some bad things during his career, and although he was a fantastic driver, he was a far from great sportsman. What he was brilliant at was never knowing when he was beaten. And he proved that for the umpteenth time on Sunday.

These were state secrets 20 years ago, and since then the Government has claimed the information is simply too difficult to dig out. Now, however, there"s a chance that ordinary motorists might just be able to benefit from some of the basic information-gathering they have paid for many times over.

Based on the platform of the M-Class - driven on Page 24 - both standard and long-wheelbase production models will go on sale in 2005, badged as the R-Class. Merc will also showcase its new V6 diesel at Detroit. Replacing both five and six-cylinder oil-burners in the current C, E and S-Class, it will initially be available in 221bhp form.
