MINI has announced the arrival of the £10,950 MINI First, a budget car perfect for first time drivers and Scrappage Scheme buyers.

Built with the backing of Audi, the hardcore road-legal machine was orig÷inally tipped to wear the famous four-ringed badge. But instead, it will cash in on the thrill-seeking image of the Austrian motorbike specialist. Under the bonnet is the 2.0-litre TFSI turbocharged powerplant used in Audi"s S3. This drives the rear wheels, and with the KTM tipping the scales at less than 700kg, it promises a 0-62mph sprint time of under four seconds.
The X-Bow (pronounced crossbow) will come in both 220bhp and 320bhp forms, and with a choice of six-speed three-pedal manual or clutchless trans÷missions. Adopting the same "Ready to Race" ethos as the manufacturer"s two-wheelers, the X-Bow is likely to spend most of its time at track days. There is no windscreen, so helmets are essential, while other weather protection is in short supply. However, special jackets with integrated radios come as standard.
The X-Bow will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March before a limited run of 100 Italian-made versions goes on sale for around ÷£27,000.
