Mercedes has announced prices for its new B-Class. The í‚á£16,995 base B150 kicks off the line-up, and comes with air-con, a CD player and foglamps as standard. SE trim adds 16-inch alloy wheels, colour-coded mirrors plus a chrome exhaust for an extra í‚á£950. Diesel prices start from í‚á£18,995 for the entry-level B180 CDI, and rise to í‚á£21,575 for the B200 CDI SE. The top-of-the-range B200 Turbo offers 193bhp, and costs í‚á£22,795.

The DC-DC converter helps models with 50kW electric motors – such as Toyota’s Prius – store more energy under braking and creates an extra 67bhp during acceleration. The work of a UK consortium headed by rally expert Prodrive, the system can be mated to smaller petrol units without a significant drop in performance.

Drink-drivers to face in-car tests

Convicted drink-drivers may soon be forced to fit in-car breathalysers, which disable their engine if they’re over the limit. It’s part of Department for Transport proposals which could come into effect by next summer. Other suggestions include tougher sentences for careless driving and a ban on speed camera locators.
