Ford has beefed up its rugged Ranger pick-up, and both trims are now available with a new 154bhp 3.0-litre diesel engine.

Opt for the ÷£19,972 Thunder and you’ll get a five-speed auto gearbox, chrome bull bars, leather seats and air-con. The sporty Wildtrack has a manual box, 16-inch alloy wheels, a bodykit and parking sensors for ÷£20,872.

IN A BID to improve its green credentials, Porsche will launch a hybrid Cayenne SUV with a 3.2-litre V6 engine mated to an electric motor before 2010.

This set-up will boost economy by 10mpg over the standard car, taking it to 32mpg, and cut CO2 output from 310g/km to 240g/km. The technology will also appear on the forthcoming Panamera saloon.

In addition, all future Porsches will get stop-start systems and regenerative braking as standard.
