In the mag"s main picture, the newcomer offers little more ground clearance than a conventional car. The five-door 4x4 is clearly much shorter, too, confirming its status as a Toyota RAV4 challenger.
At the front, the traditional Jeep grille is just visible. But at the back things are clearer; the Compass Rallye has a conventional lifting tailgate design, rather than the side-hinged one of its Japanese rival. The new car"s pronounced shoulder line is obvious, too, giving a butch stance to appeal to younger buyers.
Fans of the brand will be pleased to learn it features permanent four-wheel drive, which will allow limited off-road use, and Volkswagen"s 140bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine. Inside, the cabin will seat five with a flexible interior including a sliding rear bench.
While the concept version makes its debut at next month"s Frankfurt Motor Show, the production car is not due on UK forecourts until 2007, priced from í‚á£14,000. It will sit above the Wrangler in the line-up, but below the Patriot SUV, also to be unveiled in Germany.
