The Highway differs...

The Highway differs from other receivers as it’s not part of a standard system or hard-wired to it. Instead, it uses FM modulator technology, similar to that used in some in-car aftermarket MP3 players, to transmit sound through the ICE speakers. Radio station interference can be a problem for FM transmitters, but Pure hopes to overcome this by including quickSCAN to find free wavelengths, and provides four presets to easily swap between them.

Aimed at compact and full-size family cars, there are 44 versions, ranging from 14 to 16-inch rims, 70 to 35 profile and 175mm to 235mm width. Fulda also claims the newcomer, which is available from all leading tyre centres, will save you money, as it has a lower rolling resistance than previously - a key factor in fuel consumption.

It was clear that Alfa wanted to join the 4x4 party when it unveiled the Kamal concept at last year"s Geneva Motor Show. But while that machine is still several years from launch, fans will be able to buy the Crosswagon before 2004 is out.

Set to be unveiled at the Swiss show next month, and based on the 156 load-lugger, the Crosswagon features bigger suspension springs which give it an extra six centimetres of ground clearance. It also has special dual-purpose tyres.

However, it is the permanent four-wheel-drive set-up and three differentials that will ensure the car can prove its mettle off-road. Under the bonnet is a 1.9-litre JTD unit delivering 150bhp, mated to a six-speed gearbox. If this model proves popular, other engines will also be offered. Prices have yet to be set, but the Crosswagon is likely to carry a substantial premium over the í‚á£18,550 1.9 JTD 156 Sportwagon.
