It’s a question that I, and many motorists across the UK, ask on a regular basis: “When are they going to build that b****y bypass?” When I moved to Petersfield, Hampshire, in 1990, I had two regular routes to take me to work: the A3 to London and the A34 to Birmingham. Each had one interruption to a continuous dual-carriageway – Hindhead and Newbury respectively. Both had bypasses planned for completion by the end of last century, but only the Newbury one made it.

The company I"m talking about is back-from-the-dead Nissan. It already has a well established six-model off-road range, which includes the best-in-class X-Trail, giant Pathfinder and Patrol, ageing and very ordinary Terrano II, luxuriously agile Murano, and, as of this month, the new Navara pick-up. That means the Japanese firm currently boasts nearly as many products as Land Rover (Freelander, Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport) and Jeep (Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee) combined.

It’s the Fiesta...

It’s the Fiesta Zetec Blue – a model that’s packed with goodies which would normally add ÷£800 to the price of the Style Climate on which it’s based. However, this latest variant only costs an extra ÷£200.

The Ford’s exterior styling includes body-coloured door handles, bumpers, side mouldings and heated electric wing mirrors, plus front fog÷­lights, 16-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels and a rear spoiler.

Inside, there’s colour co-ordinated blue dashboard trim, a leather steering wheel with aluminium inserts and air-conditioning. A Quick÷­clear heated windscreen, plus single-slot Sony CD player with MP3 connectivity and wheel-mounted controls, complete the extras.

Available in three or five-door form, the Zetec Blue has a choice of 73bhp 1.25-litre and 79bhp 1.4-litre petrol engines, or a 1.4-litre diesel with 67bhp. Prices start at ÷£9,995.
