Mazda has taken the...

Mazda has taken the wraps off its wildest concept ever in Frankfurt. The MX-5 Superlight weighs in at less than 1,000kg and shows just how important weight saving will be for the firm in years to come.

To achieve it"s slim kerbweight there"s no air-con, windscreen, windows or door handles - replaced instead by iPhone-style touch sensitive slider pads.

Power comes from Mazda"s 125bhp 1.8-litre petrol unit, which propels the superlight from 0-60mph in a sprightly 8.9 seconds, yet it still promises returns at the pumps of 45mpg.

While the concept is driveable, Mazda insists it is merely a technology demonstrater and has not been earmarked for production.
