New logos have been introduced which will allow potential buyers to see more easily how a model performs in each separate category.

Cordelia Wilson from the safety organisation explained: "Car manufacturers advertise their vehicles" safety scores, but only list the adult protection rating. Most new cars achieve a maximum five-star rating in this area of the assessment.

"Yet buyers may not be aware how the models fare in the other tests - for instance, the pedestrian protection currently offered by most vehicles is simply appalling." Wilson believes that the new system will enable buyers to make a "more informed choice", and added: "This will encourage makers to improve the safety of their cars further."
