Hi-tech equipment that takes control if the driver fails to react to an incident is to be tested on a Mercedes. It uses an on-board digital camera and radar detectors to work out if the brakes need to be automatically applied. The Norwegian scientists behind the system believe the safety-boosting device could be available in the next few years.

Nick Palmer, Labour MP for Broxtowe, Notts, is adamant drivers should know what the limit is as they approach a camera, or else they may unwittingly pick up a fine and points. His draft Road Traffic Signs (Enforcement Cameras) Bill would make it mandatory for all the necessary information to be displayed on each sign.
