He works in product development for the Japanese manufacturer, but leads a double life as race engineer for James Kaye, Synchro"s driver in the Independents" Cup of the Green Flag British Touring Car Championship. He told us: "Sacrifices have to be made. It requires a lot of commitment, and we recruit people at the beginning of each season. But the number of volunteers tails off as it progresses." Most of the enthusiasts have been involved for a number of years, but according to Andy, there are no restrictions on who can and can"t join in. "Some people are pen-pushers at work," he explained. "It"s not so much about ability as a willingness to learn." The team is made up of around 15 people, but there"s none of the luxury trappings often associated with motorsport for them.

Set to debut at this...

Set to debut at this month"s British Motor Show, the XKR will be offered in both coupé and cabriolet bodystyles. Available to order now, prices start from ?67,495 for the hard-top - ?8,500 more than the existing car.

The newcomer is distinguished from the naturally aspirated 300bhp XK by a number of exterior enhancements.

Up front, the flagship has a unique bumper, with aluminium-look mesh grille, and distinctive "supercharged" embossed vents in the bonnet. At the back, there are quad exhaust pipes with special valves which enable the car to emit a raucous engine note under acceleration, yet remain comparatively quiet when cruising. Inside, the XKR boasts unique sports seats, which have the "R" logo embossed in the headrests. The badge also appears on the rev counter, gearlever and steering wheel.

The XKR is powered by a 420bhp supercharged 4.2-litre V8. It"s mated to a new six-speed automatic gearbox, which allows sequential manual changes via steering wheel-mounted paddles. Jaguar claims it delivers faster changes than on any of the XKR"s rivals, taking only 400 milliseconds to engage the next ratio. As a result, the new Jag can sprint from 0-60mph in only 4.9 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155mph.

To ensure the newcomer offers involving handling, the XKR features stiffer suspension, recalibrated stability and traction control systems, plus larger front brake discs.
