That"s why a new multi-language dictionary of terms - featuring everything from "pay on departure" to "ticket machine" - has been launched. Interestingly, there are still some gaps which could leave parking firm bosses tongue-tied. For example, there are no Italian phrases listed for traffic warden, offence or fixed penalty notice.

There are currently no plans to make the unique phrasebook available to motorists, who are easily confused when trying to park abroad. "It"s primarily aimed at helping the international car park operators, equipment suppliers and construction companies, rather than the general public," said David Marklew of the European Parking Association, which has published the 14-page document.
