Looking every inch the baby Astra with its distinctive C-pillar and tall roof-line, the supermini promises to rival Fiat"s Grande Punto in the style stakes. The Auto 1 vote was published in issue 833 and on the website. With the count complete, Citroen"s bosses were delighted with the result.

Director of public affairs Marc Raven hailed the award: "This is great news for Citroen. Your readers" vote shows that the C4 is a car which has enthused the motoring public with its combination of style and use of technology, combined in an extremely safe and secure value package. We are delighted to win this award."

The C4 showcases a return to Citroen"s design flair of the past. Thousands of Auto Express readers who voted recognised that it is the most distinctive contender in the compact family sector. But more than that, the C4 also scored highly because of its top-quality interior, driving dynamics and driver aids - such as the lane departure alert system and fixed-hub steering wheel.

Second place went to Land Rover"s Discovery with the Mercedes SLK completing the top three. The British Car of the Year trophy will be presented to Citroen at an awards dinner at the Geneva Motor Show in March, where the overall Auto 1 European Car of the Year will be named. The C4 will compete against rivals chosen by readers in 21 other countries for the ultimate accolade. The finalists will be assessed by a panel of European judges, including Auto Express editor in chief David Johns, at a special test in Milan at the end of February.
