Could it be the ultimate high-performance 4x4? A 280bhp go-anywhere Unimog, developed by German tuner Brabus, was unveiled at the Dubai Motor Show. Based on the standard U500, it has a 6.4-litre engine which produces a huge 1,100Nm of torque - three times that of a Jaguar X-Type 2.2-litre diesel. It doesn"t come cheap, though, at around ÷£156,000.

Ford is launching a two-pronged attack with its new Galaxy - which de-buted in concept form at September"s Frankfurt Motor Show - and the smaller, sportier SAV. To answer this threat, the Espace is expected to feature a range of new features, and be available in both five and seven-seat formats.

The authority has awarded a contract for 40 million new high-durability polycarbonate-based cards. These will still feature the driver"s picture, but the agency has built into the contract - and the design - the possibility of holding smart card chips (image). A spokesman for the DVLA said: "We are in the process of replacing the driving licence to address the increasing threat to security posed by counter-feiters. We don"t know when it will be adopted." The huge contract was won by Swiss firm Trüb, which says the new cards will be "virtually impossible to forge".

Driver licence production is currently running at eight million every year, made up of new licences, cards with changes to a holder"s details, replacement of lost or stolen items and 10-year renewals.
