The clever system has...

The clever system has a separate button unit from the existing pedestrian crossing, and it"s fitted higher up on a different pole so the rider can reach it without dismounting. This is set well back from the kerb so the animal does not get frightened by passing cars. Illuminated red and green horses clearly show the rider when to cross.

The first unit has been installed on the A38 north of Bristol, and others are set to appear around the country wherever popular bridleways meet busy roads.

Motorists were involved in 114 collisions with horses last year. A spokeswoman for the British Horse Society welcomed the new lights. She said: "Anything which helps riders to cross without inconveniencing road users is a good idea."

Peter Hutchinson, managing director of the device"s inventor, AGD Systems Cheltenham, added: "A modern, easy-to-use signal will help reduce accidents involving riders."
