An on-board radar would be fitted in each vehicle to measure the distance between it and the motor in front. If this gap closes, in a jam, for example, a signal would be sent back to the beacon, which would then inform others of the congestion.

Several leading firms, including BAE Systems, are involved in the project, known as SLIMSENS. A spokesman said: "This will give drivers completely up-to-date information." If approved, beacons could also be used to transmit entertainment into cars.
