The latest technology...

The latest technology from Formula One tyre supplier Bridgestone means that even the biggest 4x4s and people carriers can now use run-flats – and it’s all thanks to a unique cooling fin.

While the new designs aren’t due to hit the streets until next year, the next-generation Dueler SUV rubber features a ribbed sidewall, which cools the tyre when it is driven without air.

Heat is the major factor on how far a run-flat can go after a puncture, and this is even more of a problem on wheels with tall sidewalls, such as those found on off-roaders and MPVs.

The fins, which lift the hot air off the sidewall to provide cool spots around the tyre, mean conventional run-flat technology can now be used. To achieve the normal run-flat standard of 50 miles at 50mph, the Bridgestones don’t need as much reinforcement, so they weigh less and give an improved ride. Expect the new tyres to cost around the same as the current RFT run-flat range when they arrive early next year.
