The manufacturer has announced that it"s to be the first in Europe to use motorcycle electronics giant Acumen"s pulsar emergency brake display system in place of conventional rear lamps.
The device - which emits a three-second burst of flashing LED lights to warn cars behind that you"re braking hard - will be fitted to the S-Class.
After the initial attention-grabbing illumination, the lights revert to a static red glow. Research shows drivers following cars equipped with the system reacted 0.2 of a second faster at 62mph, the equivalent of 5.5 metres.
A spokesman for Acumen, based in Andover, Hants, said: "The motorist behind really gets the message that you are braking hard. The technology is already widely used in the US."
