There are huge safety benefits to the equipment. Its electronic "eye" has a range of 250 metres, and it can even help slow the car down - in much the same way as Active Cruise Control (ACC) - so there"s always a safe stopping distance, even when the vehicle ahead is completely obscured.
This technology is already available, but until now its high price has meant it"s been the preserve of luxury models. However, components specialist Siemens VDO has been able to develop this low-cost version.
The innovation uses an infra-red version of radar to pierce the fog and detect other cars. It"s smart enough to be able to tell instantly when visibility gets bad, and uses this knowledge to reduce the vehicle"s speed and increase the gap between motorists.
"It is able to distinguish cars from trucks, motorcycles or stationary objects," explained a spokesman.
