These official images...

These official images of Peugeot"s new 308 have been leaked ahead of its planned public unveiling. Following months of scoop shots, the five-door"s shape comes as no surprise. What is striking, though, is just how bold the showroom-ready hatchback"s finer details are.

The front end sees the firm"s grille grow even bigger, with a pronounced curve in the bonnet added above it. The headlights are more angular than those on other Peugeot models, and appear larger than the 207"s. Mean÷while, the distinctive spotlamps under÷neath them help provide the new car with even more visual drama. The 308"s rear is just as individual, with a swooping tailgate, bulging bumper and stylish single-colour lamps.

Inside, the cabin has a smart but conservative dashboard. The all-new car is larger than the outgoing 307, and features more interior space, while there"s also a Citroen C4 Picasso-style panoramic windscreen.

In addition to the existing range of engines available in the 307, the firm will introduce its latest 1.6-litre naturally aspirated and turbo÷charged petrol units into the line-up. These have already been seen in the 207, and are also shared with MINI.

However, early indications are that hot hatch fans shouldn"t bank on a GTi version of the 308 becoming available in the future. Despite the heritage of the badge, Peugeot bosses currently have no intention of launching a true high-performance flagship. A warm Feline or GT-badged model is likely to be as hot as the 308 gets.

When it goes on sale in the UK in autumn next year, the newcomer will be offered in both three and five-door trims. Versatile SW and estate models will join the line-up later, along with a folding hard-top CC version. Last to arrive will be the 3008 compact-MPV.
