This is the next-generation model, caught testing in Germany. Underneath the mule"s body lies the all-new 5-Series" chassis, engine and gearbox. There are obvious clues: the front bumper has been redesigned to improve cooling, while the wings have grown to fit a wider wheelbase. At the back, the arches have also been extended to cover the increased track.

With larger dimensions, the next 5-Series will provide more space inside for passengers and luggage. Under the bonnet, there will be a revised range of engines, including BMW"s new 306bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder unit, plus the possibility of a hydrogen-powered motor, too.

The interior is likely to feature a revised and simplified iDrive control system, plus improvements to quality, keeping the model at the top of the class when it appears in 2008.
