With a host of styling cues taken from the existing 3 and 6 models, the people carrier concept - called the MX-Flexa - points the way to a future replacement vehicle for the Mazda MPV, which has struggled to find buyers in the UK.

To be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, it features a more attractive face than at present. It has Peugeot-style headlamps which sweep up into the bonnet, as well as an oval grille and neatly integrated foglights. At the rear, the tail-lamps have been revamped, too, while both ends get a new bumper design to give the car a more rounded look.

Hyundai is playing its cards close to its chest over the model. However, our Korean sources have revealed that the interior will also be upgraded, in order to give it more character, improved safety and a wider range of equipment. Expect all variants to feature air-conditioning, a CD player, four airbags, anti-lock brakes and traction control as standard.

The Getz"s engine line-up will also be improved. The current 1.3-litre petrol unit is to be dropped in favour of a more powerful but less thirsty 1.4, which will offer around 95bhp.

A new 1.6, set to deliver 110bhp and 45mpg, will replace the current version, while the 1.5-litre turbodiesel will be overhauled and have a more advanced common-rail fuel-injection system to boost refinement and economy.

But all these improvements come at a price. When the Getz hits the UK early next year, it is expected to be slightly more expensive than the current model. The new car should start at around í‚á£7,500, and climb to í‚á£10,500.
