Second-hand sales are down compared to last year. But used dealers needn’t panic. Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show the first nine months of the year saw 1,998 fewer registrations than the same period in 2005. Yet business failures among small dealers are growing, as car supermarkets take an increasing share of sales.

A new system called Tracker Response uses GPS technology and a driver validation set-up. If the car is started by someone without the special electronic tag, a text message or E-mail is sent to the owner. They can call a control centre to say whether the motor should be moving or not - and even monitor the vehicle"s movements remotely via any PC! Anxious parents will also be able to keep an eye on how fast grown-up children are driving when they borrow the car, as the unit has a speed limit alert function.

To celebrate being supplier to the British Olympic Association, and with the help of record-breaking triple jumper Jonathan Edwards, MG Rover also showed off a í‚á£10,795 limited-edition Streetwise. The car boasts front foglamps and six-spoke alloys. Only 500 will be made - all finished in sonic blue with Olympic ring decals.
