The car uses the same 256bhp 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine found in the larger 6 MPS, and will also feature that model"s sporty six-speed manual gearbox. As well as a Subaru Impreza-style bonnet scoop, the 3 MPS will get a beefy bodykit to set it apart from lesser models.

Could it be the ultimate high-performance 4x4? A 280bhp go-anywhere Unimog, developed by German tuner Brabus, was unveiled at the Dubai Motor Show. Based on the standard U500, it has a 6.4-litre engine which produces a huge 1,100Nm of torque - three times that of a Jaguar X-Type 2.2-litre diesel. It doesn"t come cheap, though, at around ÷£156,000.

Unveiled at the Essen Motor Show in Germany, the Formula Racing (FR) model has new bumpers, honey-comb grilles, titanium-coloured door mirrors and twin tailpipes to help distinguish it. Inside, a unique steering wheel and white instruments set it apart from lower-spec cars.

A 167bhp 2.0-litre diesel and revised suspension should ensure the compact MPV performs well when it arrives in showrooms next March. The powerful TDI unit is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, while uprated brakes, which are clearly visible behind the FR"s unique 17-inch alloys, bring the newcomer to a halt.
