It looks as if Skoda is about to go exploring again. This is the Fabia Scout – a rugged version of the new Estate. As with the Octavia and Roomster Scout variants, it has protective body mouldings and a raised ride height. To that it adds a handy, fold-out rear ledge and a system of luggage straps in the boot. With more room than a Volvo V50 and chunky looks, it should prove popular when it goes on sale next year, priced from around чЈ12,000. A facelifted Octavia will also arrive in 2008.

It"s a real shame that the favourite for next year’s championship has just retired. And no, I’m not going to start looking at Michael Schumacher through scarlet-tinted spectacles. He did some bad things during his career, and although he was a fantastic driver, he was a far from great sportsman. What he was brilliant at was never knowing when he was beaten. And he proved that for the umpteenth time on Sunday.

We"ve been hunting for official pictures of VW"s Fox city car. Officially, it"s the Lupo replacement - and it"s just debuted at Germany"s Leipzig Motor Show - but at 3.82m long, it"s only 8cm shorter than the Polo. Two petrol engines - a 54bhp 1.2-litre and 73bhp 1.4 - and a 73bhp 1.4 TDI diesel will power the car.
