Called the X-Bow (pronounced crossbow), it has been created by Austrian motorcycle firm KTM for wind tunnel testing. And it corresponds in every detail with the final full-size car, which will be unveiled at next month"s Geneva Motor Show.

Whereas previous hybrid cars have concentrated on winning over city-bound drivers, the Accord is one for the open road. Powered by the 240bhp V6 already offered in American Accords, the model promises all the performance of a luxury saloon, but with the economy of a much more efficient four-cylinder car.

The machine pictured here has just been unveiled across the Atlantic. It is equipped with a CVT gearbox and has a few unique design features, such as its own individual grille. However, British models will retain the more familiar European styling. The newcomer is expected to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March. It is likely to cost around í‚á£25,000 when it goes on sale towards the end of 2005.
