This Tigra is playing...

This Tigra is playing a sleight of hand as it has a bright red canvas stretched over its retractable metal roof, which is intended to conjure up memories of the vinyl roofs of the Seventies. Starring at this week’s Geneva Motor Show, the Illusion also has leather trim, heated seats and colour co-ordinated seatbelts as standard. Currently the car is an Opel-only model, but it may be sold in the UK badged as a Vauxhall.

While the Swift is already...

While the Swift is already here, the next revitalised Suzuki will be the new Grand Vitara, due in Britain in September. In the spring, the Swift Sport hot hatch and new SX4 compact SUV appear.

After that, city car buyers can look forward to a new Wagon R+ early in 2007, with a fresh Alto shortly after. The following year, Suzuki will introduce the Sport Utility Wagon, a Vauxhall Vectra-sized car with mild mud-plugging ability.

This is in contrast to the next Jimny, due at the same time. Director Hirotaka Ono said: "The new Jimny has greater off-road focus. It"s a revival of the Samurai in that respect." Further ahead, 2010 will see the arrival of a new Swift range, including a sporty cabrio to take on drop-top supermini rivals. Yet despite the investment in its line-up, the firm won"t forget its budget roots. Ono added: "We hope to increase profits by cutting costs, not raising prices."

Expect a glimpse of Suzuki"s future at October"s Tokyo Motor Show, when three all-new concepts debut.
