Get a load of this - the all-new Mitsubishi L200 pick-up. This is the double-cab Warrior version of the utility vehicle, which replaces the current model in March. The styling is inspired by the firm"s Pajero Evolution 4x4 rally-raid car, while it boasts a new 136bhp diesel engine. A power upgrade to boost output to 160bhp will also be available. Better on-road manners and a class-leading turning circle are on offer, too, with prices yet to be announced.
With a striking front...
With a striking front end and a bold shape, the latest addition to MINI"s line-up - expected to be called the Traveller - is nearly ready for the showroom. Bursting with eye-catching features and offering class-leading versatility, the new machine will become one of the must-have cars of 2007.
Looking to MINI"s heritage for inspiration, it follows two recent Traveller concepts. With prototypes undergoing intensive trials and development, the unique model will go on sale at the start of 2007. Test cars are still cleverly disguised to hide the model"s detailed features, but we can reveal exactly what"s underneath.
The estate takes on the refreshed appearance which will debut on the MINI three-door, so the front-end styling shown here will become the machine"s new face. Losing none of the existing variant"s charm, it has sleek headlamps reaching further up the wings. There"s extra chrome detailing front and rear.
A major talking point for potential buyers will be the new MINI"s unique cabin access. An asymmetric design sees a barn-style back door on only one side. It will leave a gaping Mazda RX-8-type aperture to improve versatility, without compromising overall structural rigidity. Also, the rear gets twin van doors. The chrome surround displayed on the BMW-owned firm"s latest show cars will feature on high-spec models. Crucially, there will be space for five passengers and their luggage inside.
Based on a longer hatch platform, the car will get a range of new engines. A 1.6-litre petrol unit developed with PSA Peugeot Citroen will be turbocharged for the Cooper S, while a diesel model will take power from a fresh 75bhp 1.4.
With demand for the existing MINI still outstripping supply, the maker is in no rush to expand its line-up. However, it remains committed to offering more than simply a three-door. Expect to see the Traveller at a major motor show next year. Several other spin-offs are tipped to follow, including a lightweight Speedster. A limited-edition pick-up is also on the drawing board.
